Waterproofing is the liquid membrane applied to the substrate — the walls and floor — before tiling. Its job is to prevent water from penetrating the tile and grout layer and reaching the structural elements of the building. AS 3740 requires waterproofing to be applied to the full shower floor and walls to 1.8m, around the bath and around the floor waste. A bathroom without proper waterproofing will eventually leak — typically 5–10 years after completion — causing structural damage, mould, corrosion of steel studs and complete bathroom failure requiring full strip-out again. We never shortcut waterproofing.
In some limited circumstances — on a sound, flat, bonded tile surface in a dry area — tiling over existing tiles is technically possible. However, we almost never recommend it for bathroom renovations. The existing waterproofing membrane beneath the old tiles is typically at or past its service life. Tiling over without renewing the membrane means your renovation is sitting on a failing waterproof layer. The full strip-out and re-waterproofing process typically adds $1,500–$2,500 to the project cost but is the only way to guarantee the renovation performs for 20+ years. We recommend it every time.
Larger format tiles (600×600 or 600×1200) generally make a small bathroom appear more spacious — fewer grout lines means a cleaner, more open visual field. However, very large format tiles on shower floors require a fall-to-drain design that can be tricky in compact spaces, and may require more cuts around fixtures. A popular choice for compact Hunter Valley bathrooms is 600×600 floor tile with a 300×600 or 600×1200 wall tile — the proportional difference adds visual interest without complicating the layout.
