Both are excellent options for a laundry. Engineered stone is harder, more waterproof and more stain-resistant — ideal if you use the benchtop heavily for folding, soaking and treating stains. It costs more but lasts indefinitely and looks premium. Laminate benchtop in a waterproof finish is a solid budget option that performs well in a laundry if kept dry around the sink area. We recommend stone for any laundry where budget allows — the cost difference over the life of the renovation is minimal and the performance improvement is significant.
In the vast majority of cases, no — laundry renovations in Newcastle are considered routine internal works and do not require council approval or a CDC/DA.
